UNISON Green

UCL has an Environmental Sustainability Steering Group which has recently evolved into a fully fledged “official” UCL committee after two or three years of development. It is chaired by the Dean of Social and Historical Sciences and it is unlike most other management-union meetings within UCL because it includes far more different groups of interested parties including members of the student environmental group People and Planet. UNISON’s Branch Secretary is a member of this steering group. At UNISON’s 2009 Higher Education Sector Conference it was agreed that the UNISON HE Sector would develop links and promote the work of People and Planet. See page 3 of this link:

There is no sense on this group of we sit on one side of the table and “they” sit on the other. The members of this committee are all on the same side and we all work towards making UCL a greener and more waste/energy efficient place. Areas outside the remit of the Group are:

Ethical investment Policy, which is the responsibility of UCL Council;

the content of the academic curriculum, which is the responsibility of the Academic Committee;

and the activities of staff and students as private individuals outside of UCL.

The committee meets three times per academic year, it has its own Terms of Reference and it is preparing an Environmental Policy for UCL. It is this group which is responsible for green champions in departments, divisions and faculties across the campus. If you’re interested in becoming a green champion in your department let your department head know and if you already have one talk to him or her about forming a green group in your work area.

This group is also responsible for nudging UCL towards adopting an Environmental Management System which it did in January. Ecocampus is the system chosen because it is specifically aimed at the Higher Education Sector. Find out more about it here:
