Courses

The work of the branch gets done by its members, all of whom are volunteers. Stewards, health and safety reps, lifelong learning advisers, learning reps and branch officers have the right to paid time off for training in their union duties. This applies to part time staff too. It you see a course on this page that you are interested in and you are prepared to commit some of your time to work for the branch after completing it, please get in touch. All courses are free to members.

The following courses are offered by the TUC:

Union Reps Stage 1
This is a core programme for union representative to develop their skills in order to become an effective rep

Stepping Up - The advanced course for union reps
This course is designed for union representatives who have already completed the TUC Stage 1 Union Representatives Course or its equivalent, and who have had subsequent experience as an elected union rep.

Dealing with the Economic Downturn
This course is for reps who want to build their representative skills and develop an understanding of what the economic downturn means for unions.

Health & Safety Stage 1
Core programme for trade union health and safety representatives. It is the first stage in the TUC health and safety training programme. It is designed to help you build the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to carry out your work as a safety rep.

Next Steps for Safety Reps: Stage 2
This course is designed for health and safety representatives who have already completed the TUC Health & Safety Stage 1 Course or its equivalent, and who have had subsequent experience as an elected health and safety rep.

Introduction to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)
Find out how the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and HSE COSHH Essentials can help in your workplace

Tackling Stress in the Workplace
Understand prevention, control and action measures for specific conditions at work (work-related stress)

Health & Safety Update
This course will help safety reps recognise the implications of new legislation, standards or policies for the workplace or union

Accident Investigation and Reporting in the Workplace
This course will help safety reps develop a strategy to investigate accidents and reduce risks to members' health and welfare.

Risk Assessment
This course will help trade union health and safety reps to: * identify the key legal requirements concerning risk assessments * understand the risk assessment process * relate risk assessment to strategies for improving health and safety at work

Occupational Health
A 2-day course on prevention and rehabilitation.

TUC Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety
This course will develop your understanding of health and safety principle and practice

Trade Unions and the Environment
This course will help union reps to identify environmental changes affecting the workplace.

Union Learning Representatives
Core course for union learning representatives (ULR) to develop their skills and knowledge on the role of a ULR

NEW TUC Union Learning Representatives Stage 2 Course
This course will provide ULRs with the opportunity to build on knowledge and skills developed in the new TUC ULR Stage 1, other initial ULR courses and in areas that are fundamental to their role.

Supporting Learners
This course will help union learning reps understand the role of the union learning representative in supporting learner in the workplace.

Climbing Frame for Union Learning Reps
This course will help union learning reps understand how the Climbing Frame can be used to enhance their own role and provide detailed and structured support for learners.

Supporting learners into higher learning
A course to help reps support higher learners.

Equality reps
The Equality rep training is a new course for an exciting new role. The equality rep is a lay official who will be looking at equality issues in the workplace and how to deal with them.

Dealing with Domestic Violence in the Workplace - A Trade Union Issue
This course has been developed: to raise awareness of domestic violence and its impact on members in the workplace.

Gender, Globalisation and Poverty
In paid work or not, women make up a growing majority of the world's poor. This course explores the unequal impact of globalisation and the challenges it presents for international development.

Equalities Update - Sexual Orientation and Religious Belief Regulations
This purpose of this course is to provide guidance on new legislation and an opportunity to examine how this might affect you and your members

TUC Diploma in Employment Law
This course is designed for experienced trade union representatives - the key link between the workplace and the wider union. It will help engage with the development of employment law, and to develop skills needed for higher level study or activism.
